Pre-op Testing Today

Ava had her pre-op procedures and testing today at Children's. We got there this morning expecting her to have a chest CT and expecting to be admitted overnight with surgery first thing in the morning. When we got there, the plan ended up being CT scan, pre-op testing, then go home until tomorrow. You definitely have to be flexible in the medical world.

She had a CT scan of her chest with contrast die in order to see the blood flow through her heart and related structures. She was sedated for the procedure, but did well with the anesthesia. She was enjoying some apple juice when we got to her in recovery (she's never had juice before). She started squalling when she saw us, but I think it was just for dramatic effect.

After recovering, we headed up to the cardiology floor for pre-op testing. She had an echo and chest x-ray. They also drew what seemed like a gallon of blood. She definitely did not appreciate that process! We talked with the nurse practitioner and nurse anesthetist about what to expect tomorrow. This time, we pretty much know the drill.

Now we are back at Sarah and Patrick's house with both kids asleep. Ava is worn out and, sadly, today was the easiest part.

Tomorrow, we will arrive at 6:00 a.m. ready for surgery. She is the first case, so hopefully they'll start quickly. They will repair the defects associated with the Tetralogy of Fallot, repair the AV Canal defect, take down her shunt, and possibly work on her left pulmonary artery. It will be a very extensive repair.
